Parkablog: The Bauder Species

An adult Bauder

Having evolved on the larger land mass of the second planet of what they would call the Baudestar System, the Bauder quickly became the dominant species of their homeworld.

These biped herbivores are descendents of the biped armless Otag family, whose last living representives are the herbivore Otagnetas and the omnivore Disalhemiz. The closest living relatives to the Bauder would be the semi-intelligent herbivore Saldoracio, at one time domesticated by the ancient Bauder villages, and the dangerous carnivore Draki, a species that rivaled the Bauder in intelligence during the Bauder’s Stone Age, before extensive hunting drove them back into non-sentience.

Despite being herbivores, the Bauder developed a significative level of agressiveness. The primitive ones were short-tempered and prone to wars, and it is believed today that the competition against the Draki is to blame for that.

The Bauder’s main defense mechanisms are its sharp claws. They also tend to produce a loud gutural scream when attacked, a call for help from other bauders that can be heard at a long distance. The large, flexible head of the bauder houses an hollow chamber that amplifies this call.

The Bauder possesses two types of sound-based communication. One uses the hollow chamber to produce loud sounds, but limited in variety – a simple language used to talk at distance. The other, more sophisticated, uses the creature’s vocal cords – housed in bone chambers at its throat – to produce rasp sounds, but can only be heard a few meters away.

Bauders possesse a keen hearing, but no sense of smell. The six earholes also serve as a cooling system, as many capillary veins and arteries shed excess heat through them. The Bauder’s tough pink skin resembles that of an earth elephant, but not as thick.
